We are back! It’s felt like so long since we were last at the Broadfield that there was a clear air of excitement amongst the fanbase for this game against Aston Villa. What transpired wasn’t necessarily the goalfest some had predicted, but there were green shoots of what might be to come throughout the remainder of the season, as well as some notes of caution. If this was a clash of two teams that could threaten fourth in the WSL this year, then we’d need a rematch to decide a clear winner.

The SheGulls Summary
Brighton & Hove Albion
- A point gained or two points dropped? It’s very difficult to say. Whilst Brighton had the better of the play overall it’s hard to argue against the fact that Villa hit the bar twice, once in each half. There were a lot of positives for the Albion though, which we’ll elaborate on in due course, but chief among them has to be a clean sheet with a brand new defensive unit. If we can make it hard to score against us from the start, you have to feel like the goals at the other end will come.
- Going forward, the trio of Michelle Agyemang, Madison Haley and Kiko Seike all had their moments, but went without the clear cut chances that they were searching for. There’s no doubt though, with the attributes those three players bring, strength, power, positioning, drive and so much more, they will get more opportunities as they develop their relationship.
- In terms of shots, Rachel McLauchlan had one palmed away in the first half which fell awkwardly to Jelena Cankovic who just couldn’t get a proper strike away on the rebound. Fran Kirby had the ball in the net, but was clearly offside, and in the second half Agyemang clipped the outside of the post on a deflected shot which the goalkeeper seemed to have covered.
- Defensively the Albion looked excellent, bar one or two moments, which has to be expected with a goalkeeper and centre back making their debuts, and another centre back who hasn’t started a game since December 2023.
- The two full-backs, McLauchlan and Marisa Olislagers did really well, as it’s tough to be a player who likes to maraud forward when you only have two central defenders behind you. Both managed their defensive and offensive outputs impressively though, Rackie Mackie in particular looking dangerous in and around the box.
- Charlie Rule, now returned from long-term injury and match fit, really grew into the game. Villa tried to get at her and McLauchlan early and whilst she did have a couple of lapses in concentration (understandable after so long out) as the game wore on she just looked more and more comfortable in her new role.
- Moeka Minami was absolutely as advertised and more. She didn’t put a foot wrong the whole game, she didn’t let a single runner past her, her passing and heading accuracy was on point – seriously impressive – just an absolute rock at the back. With Minami amongst our other defensive talent, you can see this being a completely different outlook for an Albion defence which has struggled over the past few seasons.
- Whilst we’re on players making their debuts, Chiamaka Nnadozie looked absolutely imperious between the sticks. Yes, she did have a couple of passes that jangled the nerves, and her propensity to come out early can keep you on the edge of your seat, but in terms of command, presence and just all round ability, she’s just on a different level. At one point Nnadozie easily rose to collect a cross ahead of the oncoming Villa player who bumped into her as she landed. As her opponent rolled around on the ground Maka just looked down at her as if to say ‘who are you and what are you doing?’. Ladies, gentleman, people of the world – we have a keeper – in more ways than one.
- The midfield was solid if unspectacular, Maisie Symonds did well in the ‘six’ role but you can see her wanting to get forward too, more like an ‘eight’ if we’re playing the numbers game. She is starting to get a grip on games now though which is pleasing and her development is there for all to see. We all know what Cankovic and Kirby can do, but there just wasn’t quite enough of it in this game. Fran in particular was a bit loose with her passing, and whilst to anyone else’s standards she played well, she will want a few of those opportunities back I’m sure.
- The substitutes that came on did well and added value to a slightly tiring team. Nadine Noordam harried their back line into a few mistakes, Bex Rayner showed flashes of her ability on the ball, and Carla Camacho looked quality in the brief time she was on the pitch.
- Overall, for a season opener, you have to take the positives. To keep a clean sheet against a team who beat us twice last year and could easily have provided an upset, has to be an achievement. Whilst the Albion will be frustrated that they couldn’t get that goal and take all three points, there are certainly worse ways to start off the campaign.
Aston Villa
- Villa came with a gameplan to try and catch us on the counter and to a certain extent it worked, but Brighton aren’t the same team that got exposed that way repeatedly last year. Yes they hit the bar twice, but it has to be said, against the run of play. They do have quality players though and at home will be a different proposition. No doubt in my mind they’re one of a few teams who will vie for that 5-7 position in the WSL this season.
- I’m not sure what the threshold is in the WSL for ‘failing to control your players’ – but Villa had 6 yellow cards. I wouldn’t say they came off as a dirty team, just some mistimed tackles (credit to Brighton for drawing those), and a couple of instances where the physicality went a bit too far.
- The player that impressed me the most was Anna Patten – she’s just so commanding at the centre of that Villa defence. Five blocks, three more than any other player on her team, tells you how integral she is to keeping the opposition out.
- Although nobody wishes injury on a player, it was pleasing to see Ellie Roebuck pull on the gloves for the second half after Sabrina D’Angelo was forced off. After an absolutely horrid time with her health, both mental and physical, you can’t help but want her to do well and get back to enjoying her football.
Other Business
- In my four years as a season ticket holder I think this was the best officiated match I’ve seen. The referee Ryan Atkin was spot on with almost every decision, you could see him interacting with the players to tell them why a foul had been awarded and explaining the new guidelines. In a world where some referees prefer to just bark orders like a schoolteacher at a naughty group of children, be a Ryan Atkin instead.
- I want to give a separate shout out to the assistant referees in the game. I couldn’t see much of Bhupinder Gill on the far side, though he seemed to make all the right calls – but I could see almost to the minutest detail Nicoleta Bria on the near side. Whilst there were one or two tricky throw-in decisions which could have gone either way, she kept up with play excellently, her offside calls were spot on – and most impressive of all – if she saw an infraction, she let the referee know and signalled clearly. The teamwork between the three was clear and obvious and an example of how it should be week in week out.
- I think some saw the attendance of 2,219 as a little low – particularly after England’s victory in Euro 2025 – but it is consistent with last years’ home opener against Everton which drew 2,125. Without going into in too much depth, this doesn’t surprise me. It’s a fact that women’s football has a very low retention rate for fans, so it’s an effort each season for clubs to just stand still, never mind grow. There are only two ways our attendances improve dramatically – one, we play in Brighton (which we’re hoping to hear news on sooner rather than later) – and two, we attract world renowned star players, particularly Lionesses.
- We had a fantastic time as always in the Fanzone, thank you to everyone who came and said hello, went away with some goodies, and signed up for the SheGulls newsletter! We also debuted our Patreon link and helped people out with a few questions on it – so feel free to contact us with more if you have any!
The SheGulls Podcast will be recorded tonight and released a day or two after, so for more analysis of this game, do give it a listen. We’ll also be previewing the match against Manchester City on Friday night and covering any additional Albion news.
Great to be back in the saddle once more and to anyone on the coach to Citeh – I’ll see you there!
