PRESS CONFERENCE – DARIO’S DEBUT!

That’s right ladies and gentleman – he is here! Our very own ‘Super Dario’ live and in-person down on the South Coast.

We were fortunate enough to be invited in to his first press conference as Albion Head Coach and here is what he had to say:

  • Accepted the role at Brighton because he is ambitious and it aligned with his plan going forward. Also they are a club “you don’t say no to”, so for him the decision was ‘easy’.
  • Excited to see what all the incoming players can do, but also with the talent that is already at the club.
  • Said Colombia vs Jamaica at the Women’s World Cup 2023 had the best atmosphere of any game he’s ever been to. That showed him how far the game can grow.
  • On his style of play: You can expect possession, attacking, and an intent to dominate the game, however, particularly with possession, it must have ‘purpose’.
  • The aim of finishing in the top four is something he is aware of, but his intention is to play every single game to win. As far as he is concerned ‘every team should aim to be champion’ first and foremost.
  • On the poor home form: It’s important to play a good brand of football in front of your own fans, but the aim is to win whether it’s home or away.
  • On the multicultural nature of the squad: Not a big deal because they all have one thing in common, the language of football and a love for the game.
  • On Chris Roberts (the new Assistant HC): Chris brings an extensive knowledge of the league and he will be leaning on him for advice, particularly at the start of the season.
  • The club have been identifying the transfer targets, but he is happy with how the window has gone so far – ‘no complaints’.
  • On getting feedback from former Seagull and current Melbourne City player Rebekah Stott: Nothing at first as it was supposed to be a secret! When it did come out then she was full of praise for the people at Brighton, and he has felt the same way since arriving here.
  • On fellow Aussie Charlie Rule: Mostly know her as an opponent, but had chance to speak to her briefly. Obviously a talented young player and great to have another Australian at the club.
  • Gave a big shoutout to Ange Postecoglou for assisting him with references and being a positive influence. Also thanked new Brighton men’s coach Fabian Hurzeler for being so welcoming.

Michelle Walder, Zoe Johnson and David Weir were in attendance, although most questions were directed towards Dario. However a couple of additional notes:

  • Per Michelle Walder – There will hopefully be some news on the proposed new stadium ‘soon’. Editor’s Note: Without any direct knowledge, in context, I would suspect we will hear something in the next couple of months.
  • Per Zoe Johnson – There are likely to be some more additions to the playing squad, and they are always looking to improve when an opportunity arises. However, they are very happy with how the window has gone so far and the players they have already brought in. Editor’s Note: Without any direct knowledge, in context, I think we could see two or three more players coming in as early as next week. Quality over quantity.
  • Per Zoe Johnson – Should have contract news on Julia Zigiotti Olme and Dejana Stefanovic in the next 7-14 days. Editor’s Note: Without any direct knowledge, in context, I believe both are likely to renew, with perhaps Deckie slightly more certain to than Julia.
